| Description | | "Culturally Responsive Teaching isn’t a strategy, or even a set of strategies; rather, it is a mind-set that underlies and guides everyday classroom practices. Its focus is on validating the cultural learning tools that diverse learners bring to the classroom and leveraging them to effect positive learning outcomes for all students” (Ferlazzo & Sypnieski, 2018).
In the book, Culturally Responsive Teaching & the Brain, Zaretta Hammond defines culturally responsive teaching as utilizing students’ cultural learning styles to build learning capacity through connecting what they know to new concepts/content and to help them work towards growing brainpower. Culturally responsive teachers understand that it is important to build trust with their students in order to create a safe space for learning. They also have to examine their implicit bias and how it may impact student learning as they shift instructional practices in order to meet the cultural needs of all students in their classroom.
During this book study, we’ll meet 3 times via Zoom to discuss the book and there will be reading assigned between each Zoom meeting.
