Description | | Participants will learn the research behind accelerating reading for struggling 3-12 grade students. Based on findings from Student Achievement Partners and the Institute for Educational Sciences along with other influential authors, this class will include the “big picture” pieces that support reading comprehension as well as individual strategies teachers can use to build stronger readers in grades 3-12. Teachers will also draw connections between the important overlaps that writing, discussion, and deep inquiry play in building comprehension.
In this course you will learn:
-- The research behind why reading is complex
-- Reading accelerators and research-based strategies in grades 3-12 that support comprehension
-- The roles of fluency, background knowledge, and explicit vocabulary instruction in improving literacy skills and confidence
-- The importance of solidifying comprehension through writing and discussion
-- How to apply reading accelerators and strategies into daily classroom instruction
This course is also available for 3 credits with Hastings College. Register here for college credit. Participants joining us for the college course are welcome to arrive at 8:30 to work on coursework. The workshop will begin at 9 a.m. and conclude around 3 p.m. each day for those not participating in college credit coursework.
