Description:Many children with Autism demonstrate uneven skill development. Parents and
teachers are excited about their fluency, but frustrated with their lack of comprehension. Our
team had the opportunity to be trained by Christi Carnahan and Pam Williamson on Literacy
for Students with ASD. This training will focus on strategies for students who have grade
level or higher fluency, but struggle with reading comprehension and written
expression. We will start with response systems to teach your student how to respond to a
question. Video examples of teaching procedures will be shared. We will discuss writing
strategies and how to shape single words into sentences based on Dr. Pennington’s work.
Strategies will be geared to the primary years of elementary with a couple strategies for 4 th and
5 th grade. Strategies can also benefit students in an alternate curriculum. The team of
presenters will share their perspectives on implementing strategies in a general education
setting.
