Description | | Do your students know how to think like problem solvers? Are they able to make sense of math problems? Are they able to build equations to match problem contexts? Do they have strategies for solving problems and can they identify when to use each strategy? Do they give up easily when faced with complex math problems? Can they talk about their thinking?
Join Sue O’Connell, author of Math in Practice, to explore ways to build your students’ skills and reduce their anxiety about problem solving. Through interactive, hands-on tasks, we will explore what it takes to be a problem solver and examine ways to build students’ critical skills. During the workshop you will gather ready-to-use ideas and activities to help your students simplify problems, find solutions, explain their thinking, and build their confidence!
We will…
- identify problem-solving tasks that engage and challenge students.
- explore tools and diagrams that help students comprehend and visualize problems.
- identify critical teacher questions that help students identify their thinking and talk about their strategies.
- discuss ways to help your students persevere when problems get tough.
- explore a variety of problem-solving strategies including drawing diagrams, making tables, and working backward.
- identify websites and resources to enhance the teaching of problem solving.
- explore techniques to support students who struggle to solve problems.
Join us for a fun and insightful day and discover ways to simplify problem solving for your students!
