| Description | | K-3rd grade teachers are invited to learn how to provide students with the basic tools to map the relationship between letters and sounds, as well as build fluency with reading tasks. The basic principles of good phonics instruction will be uncovered.
Phonics instruction is a means to an end, the end being fluency in reading and writing. Participants will learn the explicit phonics lesson sequence, which will enhance fluency of readers. Along with decoding skills, an effective reading program must allow for instruction in reading fluency that will eventually build the needed bridge to reading comprehension.
“At one end of this bridge, fluency connects to accuracy and automaticity in decoding. At the other end, fluency connects to comprehension through prosody or expressive interpretation.” (Ehri and McCormick, 1998: Kuhn and Stall 2003)
Participants will have an opportunity to make learning centers focused on student centered phonics/fluency activities to take back to their classrooms. |
