DescriptionThe workshop focuses on making grammar in context accessible by focusing on students’ natural ability to examine the complex language in their lives instead of relying on traditional drill-and-kill worksheets.
Course Objectives:

  • Examine the ineffectiveness of traditional grammar teaching methods
  • Explore language use in the real world and its impact on the recipient
  • Analyze the dynamics of grammar and language in relation to power, especially related to Standard American English
  • Understand students’ natural ability to use and manipulate language
  • Explore how grammar concepts can be organized to fit into current classroom units of study, including text-based, writing-based, and reality-based models of grammar instruction
  • Address how teachers can offer more effective feedback to students’ writing in relation to grammar usage
  • Make accessible common rules of grammar and how they relate to the classroom
