Teaching Social-Communications as Replacement Behavior
Everyone uses social-communicative behavior to express their wants and needs. Most of us have learned what expected social and communicative behaviors are from our social models throughout our learning history. Because socialization is one of the three core deficits associated with Autism Spectrum Disorder, we can assume that our students with ASD will need direct instruction in the areas of communication and socialization to skillfully navigate their social environment.
Participants will:
• Compare and contrast direct instruction in social communication vs. indirect learning
• Understand the basics principles around teaching social communication (teach, practice, reinforce)
• Explore resources that may support programming for skill acquisition
