DescriptionTransitioning from a Traditional Classroom to a Comprehensible Input Classroom: It’s Not That Scary!!!

Presenter: Brett Edward Ávila, MPH; Sidney Public Schools

This all-day workshop is designed to accomplish 3 objectives: 1) establish a rationale for transitioning from grammar-based, traditional World Language instruction to Comprehensible Input (CI) methods; 2) share lessons learned and techniques; 3) develop a minimum of 3 CI strategies that you plan to implement. Brett taught a grammar-based, textbook-driven WL classroom his first year and made the leap of faith to a more CI classroom the second year. Like many, he was terrified to step away from the ways he had been taught. The change was well worth it. Students’ proficiency improved and they were using the language. He will demonstrate how he modified using textbook/worksheets to create Personalized Questions and Answers (PQA), Circling techniques, Total Physical Response (TPR), Storytelling, and Teaching Proficiency Through Reading and Storytelling (TPRS). At the 2016 Colorado Congress on Foreign Language Teaching Fall Conference, a panel of teachers, including WL expert Dr. Bill Van Patten, said that even bad Comprehensible Input is better than no comprehensible input, 10 minutes per class can make a difference. They encouraged those making the transition to do a little at a time. The workshop is designed to build your capacity to take small steps in an important direction.
